The PORTRAIT HELIAR 75mm F1.8 is our first full-frame compatible interchangeable lens with spherical aberration control – a fast, manually focusable telephoto lens of medium focal length, exclusively for Sony E-mount. It covers the full-frame image circle and its optical design is specially adapted to the image sensors of Sony system cameras.

The focus of the lens is on the interplay between spherical aberration and bokeh. It enables targeted control of the under- and overcorrection of spherical aberration in order to create a wide variety of bokeh images.

The optical design follows the HELIAR type with six lenses in three groups, the maximum aperture is F1.8. The spherical aberration is controlled both via a control ring for spherical aberration and via the aperture.

Main Features:

  • Versatile bokeh images thanks to the control ring
  • Compatible with electronic contacts for Sony E-mount
  • High-quality, durable housing made entirely of metal
  • Manual focusing for precise control
  • Beautiful bokeh thanks to 9-aperture blades

In under-corrected images, the focus area is softened and highlights appear with flares. The background bokeh is rendered softly. In over-corrected images, on the other hand, the focus point remains sharp and the after bokeh appears “bubble-like”. These characteristics were previously regarded as optical errors that should be corrected. This lens, however, has been specifically developed so that the properties of spherical aberration can be used as a creative tool for unique photographic expressions.

Since variable spherical aberration also physically causes a shift in the plane of focus, a mechanism was integrated that compensates for this shift by changing the distance between the lens groups in conjunction with the control ring.

The control ring has a small bump where the left thumb rests so that the correction status can also be felt tactilely.

The lens has electronic contacts – the use of the lens is saved in the Exif data of the images. It does not use the camera’s electronic lens compensation – the image quality results exclusively from the optical performance of the lens. The camera also uses a built-in distance sensor that is compatible with 5-axis image stabilizers and supports stabilization through distance information. The viewfinder can be enlarged by rotating the focus ring. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7 m. The focus is manual.

The focusing ring is made of metal with diamond grooves for excellent grip. The precisely machined metal helicoid guide ensures a silky-smooth, well-lubricated focus feel. The aperture is set directly on the lens, not via the camera dial. The nine aperture blades create a harmoniously rounded bokeh at points of light.
